It is common practice in residential and commercial ceramic tile installations to clean the tile grout with a mild detergent, such as dishwashing liquid. However, this approach can be somewhat ineffective. Over time, the high concentrations of suds produced by commercial products can cause discoloration of the grout in the tile joints. This discoloration can occur in areas where the tile has been exposed to moisture for an extended period of time such as in a basement or laundry room. In addition, because many commercial products contain chlorinated solvents, there is a risk that the discoloration will penetrate the insulating layer beneath the tile.
